Notes and Editorial Reviews

Decca's second expedition to Cleveland brings a sumptuous account of Ravel's exotic score, an interpretation that belies any thought of Maazel as a chilly, inexpressive conductor. That warmth of approach is obvious from the very start with muted strings gradually emerging into audibility, with evocative horns and flutes caressingly on the flat side of the note and the offstage chorus clear but atmospheric, all responding to Maazel's consciously chosen rubato style. Counter-balancing the overall lusciousness of approach, Maazel chooses fast tempi combined with incisive attack for the dramatic movements like the "Danse guerrière" and the final "Danse générale", and the virtuosity of the Cleveland Read more Orchestra matches its achievements in the days of George Szell.
