Notes and Editorial Reviews

RAVEL Gaspard de la nuit. Valses nobles et sentimentales. Le tombeau de Couperin Jean-Frédéric Neuburger (pn) MIRARE 232 (65:00)

This review violates my moratorium on new recordings of the ridiculously over-recorded Gaspard de la nuit , but this young Frenchman does stand out from the pack. Neuburger eschews the oh-so-delicate, overtly sensuous way that is the norm in this music; in his opening moments in “Ondine” you can actually hear every Read more individual note, as opposed to a gauzy haze. This sets the pace for an unusually bold take on this chestnut, with a thoughtful sense for dynamic pacing and lucid texture. This is distinctly brawny Ravel playing. Neuburger pushes the piano keys all the way down, rendering a bell-like tonality and vivid theatrics. The rest of the program, too, is delivered with a confident panache. Ravel is presented here as a Neoclassicist, more so than a dyed-in-the-wool Impressionist (which is especially apparent in the historicism of Le Tombeau de Couperin ). I’m not sure if this is the ideal approach to all of this music, and this playing does not displace my favored versions of Gaspard in particular (including, but not limited to, Aimard, Nojima, and Batagov), but good for Neuburger for offering a non-gimmicky yet novel take on such voluminously recorded music.
