Notes and Editorial Reviews

Yes, it's the Callas Tosca yet again...and it's still the one version that you must own if you've been visiting another galaxy this past half-century and for some reason haven't heard it yet. It has the incomparable Callas, fiery yet also touching and vulnerable where necessary, the lusty-lunged Giuseppe di Stefano shouting up a storm, and the best of all possible Scarpias in Tito Gobbi. Okay, I have to be honest: the legendary Victor de Sabata doesn't bring anything to the work that others haven't subsequently done equally well, but he certainly stands with the best conductors of this score, and EMI's honest mono engineering still sounds like honest mono engineering--solid, natural, a bit restricted in dynamic range but listenable to the Read more point where the performance very quickly takes over from sonic considerations. Buy. Own. Enjoy. [10/4/2004] --David Hurwitz, ClassicsToday.com [reviewing EMI 62893] Read less

Recording For The Ages February 2, 2014 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "This legendary recording has drawn raves from just about all music critics that I have read or listened to... and they turn out to be absolutely correct. Okay, so the recording is now 60 years old, and the sound is monophonic. Neither of these facts in any diminishes the splendor of the singing and the passion of the La Scala Orchestra. Maria Callas as the doomed heroine Tosca, Giuseppe de Stefano as the victimized Caravadossi, and perhaps above all the staggering performance of Tito Gobbi as one of operas greatest villains, Scarpia- these 3 magnificent singers pour everything they have into Puccini's great masterpiece. The results speak for themselves- in my view, this is one of the finest opera recordings that has ever been marketed. Tosca is a true masterpiece, and many fine recordings of it are available. For instance, I think very highly of the RCA Living Stereo recording with Jussi Bjoerling, conducted by Erich Leinsdorf (my comments in that recording have been previously posted with Arkivmusic). I have to admit, however, that this 60 year old, mono recording stands head and shoulders above even the Leinsdorf effort. Try this fabulous set and see for yourself why the critics have thought so highly of it. I'll bet you'll agree with me- the Callas/Gobbi/de Stefano collaboration is one for the ages. Highest possible recommendation!" Report Abuse
