"An invigorating recital, full of energy and producing an arresting vitality. It is impossible to resist the vigour of the Concerto, La tempesta di mare, with sparkling bravura from all concerned, while the Purcell Chaconne retains its dignity and makes a suitable contrast. But before a purposeful entry from the Queen of Sheba one feels that in the Op. 6 Concerto grosso Zukerman is driving the allegros just that bit too hard; although the Adagio is gracious enough, the momentum relaxes only temporarily. The Telemann Viola Concerto, with Zukerman producing his warmest timbre, sounds larger than life. The Pachelbel is used to provide a mellow respite, and effectively so. The dash of the music-making is helped by the conveyed enthusiasm of the players, and this is certainly a record to brighten up a dull dog. The recording is excellent, truthful in timbre and full-bodied as well as lively." Ivan March, Gramophone [5/1985] |
