Of all the medieval singer/songwriters, Oswald von Wolkenstein (c.1377–1445) was one of the last. He has also been one of the most prominent, if LPs devoted entirely to his songs is any measure. In the CD era, however, we have had only three new discs from the Augsburg Ensemble (

12:5, 33:2), Sequentia (17:6),

and Philip Pickett (not submitted for review). Rainer Böhm’s more recent disc, still a decade old, was not exclusively devoted to his songs. Little of this is left in the
Bielefelder Katalog
, so there is room for this new collection. This disc has 20 tracks, including three instrumental pieces (one is an improvisation), with both monophonic and (mostly) polyphonic songs. The songs do not, for once, include his autobiographical “Es fuegt sich,” so often heard on these programs. The ensemble numbers five singers and eight players.
Matthew Posch’s ensemble gives a rousing account of this repertoire, clearly enjoying what they are doing. If you are coming late to Oswald, this is your chance to discover a remarkable personality.
