Notes and Editorial Reviews

Carl Orff Choir conductor Robert Blank wanted to record a disc of Orff's a cappella choral works, and he also wanted the entire program to be centered around a theme. Settling on the subject of "time", which nicely fit the Orff selections, he filled out the disc with works by other German 20th century composers--Harald Genzmer, Hermann Regner, Wolfram Buchenberg--and several pertinent motets by Max Reger. The disc's unlikely opening is a pair of choruses from Monteverdi's Orfeo, transcribed by Orff, and later we hear some of Orff's music for solo voice arranged for choir by Regner. There's also Orff's harmonized setting of the chant Veni creator spiritus.

In addition to the beautiful Brahmsian sacred songs by
Read more Reger--the first four from his Op. 138 "Geistliche Gesänge" plus an Easter motet--we're treated to Buchenberg's alternately grating and edgy, luminously colored and vibrant settings of sacred Latin texts, especially notable for their skillful treatment of text-rhythms. The Genzmer and Regner works, although different in their basic approaches to text-setting, have similar--and commonly used--20th-century harmonic styles that adopt the free use of dissonance in the context of solidly tonal structures. Orff's works for men's chorus will remind many listeners of bits of the "In taberna" section of Carmina Burana.

The choral singing here is generally excellent, much of it showing impressive mastery of some challenging scores. However, there are moments of intonation lapses, and the soloists are not especially laudable. Fans of 20th-century choral music will appreciate this, especially as it presents some rarely heard and very worthy pieces (particularly the Buchenberg)--in complementary sound.
