Style and irrepressible charm August 22, 2012

"Regine Crespin was one of the greats. What might surprise those who think of her in terms of her many operatic roles, or her matchless singing of Berlioz's "Nuits d'Ete," Crespin also had French operetta style at her fingeripts. Backed by a fine cast directed by Alain Lombard, all imbued with the genuine tradition, Crespin brings the little Peruvian street singer to life vividly. Not as over the top as Claudia Novikova in the scene, you can see Crespin as the little waif licking her fingers as she tipsily reviews the wonderful things she ate and drank at the Viceroy's banquet. She is irrestible also in her song to her beloved "brigand," Paquillo, sung idiomatically by Alain Vanzo. Offenbach's contagious melodies will run in your head for weeks, and you will find yourself singing O mon cher amant, in the shower or not. This set is not to be missed by all who appreciate the almost lost art of style, elegance and most of all, charm."

"I saw the late 50's production at the Old Met and this recording is terrific. The recorded sound and the cast, both wonderful. Buy it!"
