So-So; Lacking Emotion. November 2, 2012

"I bought this Cd because of all the hoopla presented in various reviews. They all suggested that Vanska brought something new to the fabulous 9th. They were right. For the first time to my knowledge, he made it utterly boring! There are many, many other recordings of this glorious symphony out there. All that I have heard surpass this doleful effort. This is the greatest composer who ever lived! This is one of his most uplifting works! Where is the glory - the passion - the fire? If he could hear this, Ludwig would roll over in his grave! I found it to be boring and trite. The loud sections were not thrilling enough. The softer sections were weak. The choral movement was OK, but I suspect that this was not Vanska's doing. If he could have spoiled it, he probably would have. More's the pity, because the Minnesota Orchestra, nee Minneapolis Orchestra, has a rich history of excellence, and from time to time it shows its true character on this recording. There are many other outstanding renditions of this masterful work out there - Von Karajan, Bernstein, Celibidache to name a few. Don't be bedazzled by the folks who give this such a high rating. They must be as deaf as Beethoven was."
