Notes and Editorial Reviews

Putting a new face on classical music, Awadagin Pratt has emerged as a visionary among today's concert pianists. His unique interpretations are the product of a remarkably broad background in music--while studying at the Peabody Conservatory of Music, he was the first student to earn diplomas in three performance areas. Breaking onto the international scene, he is fast becoming the face of tomorrow's music. Pratt and Mussorgsky share an improvisatory impulse, making this performance of 'Pictures at an Exhibition' a notable gem. Pratt's patience and finesse combine to create a sense of vitality in even the slowest movements. In contrast to Brahm's Variations and Fugue in B-flat on a Theme by Handel, also performed on this album, Read more "Pictures" uses a stark harmonic technique. Pratt, however, is adept at performing in several equally complex styles with remarkable accomplishment. His arrangement of J.S. Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue in C Minor is an achievement in itself. Pratt's TRANSFORMATIONS will undoubtedly be a milestone in his outstanding career.

"[In] Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue in C Minor, BWV 582,...his slowish opening gradually, and quite compellingly, picks up speed as the piece progresses, and relaxes at key moments. The result is a quite disarming and magisterial 13 minutes of music-making." -- William Zagorski, FANFARE
