Notes and Editorial Reviews

Hearing Modest Mussorgsky's 'Khovanshchina' sung in Italian has the effect of placing in the foreground the Russian composer's link and debt to the operas of Giuseppe Verdi. Both the sprawling musical architecture, threaded together by thematic reminiscence, and the terribly complicated plot suggest at first 'Il trovatore' and then 'Don Carlo' and 'La forza del destino.' The complexity of Mussorgsky's plot is in many ways the point: this opera about the events that brought about Peter the Great's rise to power reflects the very untidy beginning of the modern Russian state. Moreover, censorship laws prevented Mussorgsky from writing directly about a Romanov, so he was compelled to focus on those around Peter, especially his Read more enemies.
Representing his leading enemies is the title character of Prince Ivan Khovansky, a bass role in the line of Boris Godunov. The great Russian bass Nicolai Ghiaurov gives a ground-trembling turn as Khovansky in this 1973 reissue--an ensemble performance skillfully held together by conductor Bogo Leskovich. While the celebrated baritone Cesare Siepi predictably impresses as Dosifey (the leader of the Old Believers), it is Fiorenza Cossotto's Marfa, with her silken and technically flawless mezzo-soprano, that shares the spotlight with Ghiaurov.
