Notes and Editorial Reviews

"The nine overtures on this bright-sounding CD are all approached as genuine and individual curtain-raisers, with sensible pauses in between. The precision of the ASMF playing, the strings in particular, is sheer joy and yet there is dynamism and theatre-like expressiveness throughout. Not over-reverberant, the recording is strong on definition and the stereo staging is about ideal. This is perhaps a disc to be played selectively, rather than straight, and CD cueing makes such sampling a very easy matter." - GRAMOPHONE "The nine overtures on this bright-sounding CD are all approached as genuine and individual curtain-raisers, with sensible pauses in between.  Overtures galore! October 10, 2012 By James D. S. (Villa Hills, KY) See All My Reviews "This is a collection of Mozart overtures. They are very well played and the recorded sound is crisp and clear. Some of the pieces are familier and others not so much, but all receive excellent performances. It's a CD where you may want to listen to a few at a time as there is a sameness to having a whole CD of overtures by the same composer. But it is Mozart!" Report Abuse
What is there not to like September 17, 2012 By Graham N. (PORTLAND, OR) See All My Reviews "Hard to get these wrong. Even for a Mozartophobe like myself, it was highly enjoyable. All the popular overtures and a couple of lesser known ones (Lucio Silla anyone?). Mariner and the ASMF could churn these out all day long - well-played, well-recorded, and chock full of musicianship." Report Abuse
Sparkling. September 16, 2012 By John W. (WOORI YALLOCK, VIC) See All My Reviews "The conductor Neville Marriner sets a rollicking pace for these well known and others not so familiar overtures. The tempo is really not too fast, but exciting, and the music is not compromised. It is one of those discs that you never get tired of playing, it is refreshing to listen to again and again, partly die to the genius of Mozart, and partly due to Neville Marriner. The short playing time is only 49 minutes, which is poor- one would have thought that that 2 or 3 more overtures could have been easily accommodated- but this doesn't detract from the high quality of this disc."
