Joan Chissell gave the LP a qualified but mainly enthusiastic welcome in April, and my reactions to the CD are similar, if rather more sharply polarized. That is, the playing of the A minor Sonata strikes me as inspired, going right to the heart of this extraordinary work; in the other two sonatas I find both slow movements a shade formalistic and lacking in spaciousness, whilst their outer movements, shapely, articulate and energetic though they are, do not quite carry the interpretative conviction displayed in the A minor... let me stress the overall excellence of the playing, the superb recording, and the fact that the performance of the A minor Sonata is simply one of the finest examples of Mozart piano playing on record.
