Notes and Editorial Reviews

An idiomatic and enticingly performed recital‚ gaining in depth and variety.

No doubt much thought went into the ordering of this programme; nevertheless I can’t help wondering what course it took. Certainly the order is not chronological – Julian Haylock in his notes rearranges it to chart a line from 1824 (Frühlingslied) to 1847 (An die Entfernte and Das Aehrenfeld). Now‚ curiously‚ it was after that last song (‘The Wheatfield’) that I broke off for an interval. This was just beyond the halfway mark‚ and at that point it seemed one could do no better than repeat Richard Fairman’s words in his review of Volume 1 (5/98): ‘a homely affair...little...to disturb the sense of familiar contentment or suggest any
Read more undercurrent of darker feelings’. So far that summary seemed to apply to Volume 2 even more than to its predecessor‚ in as far as Sophie Daneman’s partner in that had been Nathan Berg‚ a relative heavyweight‚ with Auf der Wanderschaft to deepen the picture‚ while here the lighter Stephan Loges simply complemented the soprano with his equable lyric baritone. That was after track 16. Coming back and starting at Erntelied‚ a harvestsong in which the reaper is Death‚ one found the programme taking a more interesting turn – and holding the interest right to the end. So‚ round the piano in the drawingroom we remain‚ but it has become a more thoughtful place‚ less restricted by prettiness and complacency. The artists are of a quality that would distinguish any soirée‚ not least the accompanist‚ who provides unostentatiously graceful support when that is all that is called for‚ but has the scherzo‚ Neue Liebe‚ at his nimble fingers’ ends with the assurance of a virtuoso. Sophie Daneman sings sweetly and sometimes‚ as in Wartend‚ with real imaginative strength. Stephan Loges impresses with beautiful tone‚ a wellschooled legato and a pleasing refinement of style and sensibility.
