In her booklet note, pianist Diana Ambache suggests that Marion Bauer (1882?1955) ?must have been indefatigable.? Bauer, from America?s West Coast, studied in New York, Paris, and Berlin, and was the first of the many American composers to have lessons with Nadia Boulanger. In addition to composing, Bauer was also a teacher, writer, lecturer, and critic. The music here is melodic, charming, concise, folksy, and very accessible, with echoes of English pastoralism and French elegance; nor is it without soul and it is certainly expertly crafted and without pretence. very interesting and limited, each work or movement palling early on, and some begin promisingly. The committed performances are lucidly and vividly recorded.
