Notes and Editorial Reviews
A revelatory account of Mahier's symphony with voices, noteworthy above all for the outstanding singing from Urmana and the playing of the VPO.
– Gramophone [4/2001]
...It's surprising to me that Boulez's Mahler is still viewed warily in some quarters, as if the conductor's legendary precision and intellectual rigor were somehow disqualifying in such repertoire. With Das Lied, careful attention to the composer's distilled orchestral sonorities and an ability to shape a large musical structure (in Der Abschied) will serve the listener well. Ironically, Boulez's awareness of every tiny detail in the score gives his performance a sense of freedom, spontaneity, and emotional directness. Violeta Urmana and Michael
Schade have appealing voices and sing with great sensitivity to the texts.

...Scarcely less fine is Pierre Boulez's new DG recording, with the Vienna Philharmonic, of Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde. Boulez's recent appearances, in this country, with the VPO were greeted with the usual journalistic clucking and cackling about the "oddity" of the "mismarriage" between Boulez, the ice-cold serialist, and this most tradition-steeped of orchestras. Well, don't believe a word of it. Sometimes it seems to me that music critics would rather do anything on earth than simply use their ears. If you buy this performance and use your ears you'll hear as deeply moving and as beautifully shaped a reading of Mahler's great work as you ever have before—at least! The excellent singers are Violeta Urvaná and Michael Schade.
