Notes and Editorial Reviews

This is the premiere recording of Steven Mackey's opera Ravenshead. His idiom draws on western art music as well as popular music. Mackey's first music theater work has been called "equal parts MTV video and Metropolitan Opera." The opera, for solo voice and chamber ensemble, has had over 40 performances. It is based on the real life story of Donald Crowhurst, a British entrepreneur who attempted to be the first person to sail solo around the world. In the opera, Crowhurst's fictional counterpart, Richard Ravenshead, is given a tour de force portrayal by Rinde Eckert, who had the "New York audience hanging on the edge of their seats" in a work that "signals a 21st Century full of possibility for new music theatre." 761594207229 MMC Read more Recordings MMC 2072 LOMON/WHIPPLE/SUBER/McKINLEY New American Concertos "Czech Radio Symphony; Gerard Schwarz, conductor Read less
