Notes and Editorial Reviews

The Naxos series of the orchestral music of Witold Lutoslawski generally presents music from all phases of the great composer's career. In Vol.1, the 'Funeral Music' for strings, written to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Bartok's death, presents the composer in his overtly nationalistic phase. Although harmonically more advanced than Bartok's, the music is immediately accessible and shows the composer already firmly in possession of the unerring sense of form that would characterize all his later music.
The triptych of the 'Partita,' 'Interlude,' and 'Chain II' marks Lutoslawski's only works for violin and orchestra. The outer panels were originally written separately for Anne Sophie Mutter. However, for a concert in which both
Read more works were to be heard, Lutoslawski added the intervening 'Interlude' without soloist to form a 40-minute concert work comparable to the Brahms or Beethoven violin concertos. Finally, the very late Symphony No. 4, written in Lutoslawski's characteristic two-movement form for the Los Angeles Philharmonic, sums up a lifetime of orchestral writing with a final masterpiece. The performances are excellent, as is the recorded sound, and at Naxos's budget price they are irresistible. Read less
