![]() This one's easy. Here is one of the finest recordings of American music ever made. Piston's symphonies still do not receive the attention they deserve. He's in the same position in the United States that Roussel occupies in France: superbly crafted works finely shaped, approachable, reasonably brief, and generally ignored. Go figure. This recording of his Second Symphony never has been seriously challenged, certainly not by Gerard Schwarz's Delos recording, and has come up sounding better than ever in this excellent remastering. Michael Tilson Thomas went on to remake Sun-treader for Columbia with the Buffalo Philharmonic as part of his complete Ruggles edition (shamefully never issued on CD), but this scorcher of a performance still holds pride of place. He has the orchestra playing at peak form, brass and strings attacking Ruggles' tortured melodies with furious intensity. It's simply thrilling. So for that matter is the Ives, though at the time this recording was made the full orchestral score had not yet been made available, so Thomas uses the then standard version for chamber orchestra. I won't tell if you won't. Buy this disc. [3/29/2001] --David Hurwitz, ClassicsToday.com |
