Notes and Editorial Reviews

"The Previn I would now count the most desirable of all CDs of this work, both on performance and recording... it is cleaner than any with the firmest placing and a realistic perspective, which gives far more depth to the sonic stage from front to back than there is in either the Karajan or the Solti recordings. The brass sound in particular is rich and thrilling (try ''Uranus'', which is spectacular), and the fading of the offstage chorus into silence at the end of ''Neptune'' is the most atmospheric of any, even more natural-sounding (not just an engineer operating a fader) and more protracted than even Gibson's..." -- Edward Greenfield, The Gramophone (12/1985) "The Previn I would now count the most desirable of all CDs of this work, both on performance and recording... it is cleaner than any with the firmest placing and a realistic perspective, which gives far more depth to the sonic stage from front to back than there is in either the Karajan or the Solti recordings.  Top Notch Holst February 26, 2014 By V. Guernon (South Kingstown, RI) See All My Reviews "This is the first of two recordings Previn made of Holst astrological masterpiece. Unlike many conductors, Previn does not focus on the big movements (Mars, Jupiter, Uranus) at the detriment of the other movements. Each movement is totally captivating on its own. This is one of the most satisfying versions of The Planets that I have ever heard. The London Symphony plays gloriously, and the sound of the recording is of demonstration quality." Report Abuse
