In addition to being a master organist, Johann Sebastian Bach was a talented violinist, who according to his son Carl Philipp Emanuel, "In his youth, and well into old age, played the violin with a clear, penetrating tone." The elder Bach's violin concertos are staples in any violinist's repertoire and are well represented on recordings. What makes this recording by violinist Fabio Biondi unique is the fact that he does not play the standard concertos, but reconstructions of Bach's harpsichord concertos. Biondi and his ensemble, Europa Galante, further turn the tables when harpsichordist Sergio Ciomei joins them for a harpsichord reconstruction of the Violin Concerto in D major.

Biondi plays these works with an
Read more almost palpable sense of joy. He is marvelously animated in the swirling rhythms that animate the Concerto in G minor's Allegro finale. Biondi also grasps the elegiac quality of the concerto's Largo as the delicate pizzicato playing of the ensemble supports him. This is Bach playing of the very highest order. Read less
