Every year the Berliner Philharmoniker invite artists for the orchestra's traditional birthday concert on May 1st.

In 2012, the guests were Gustavo Dudamel, conducting, and Gautier Capuçon (cello). Gustavo Dudamel has recorded Beethoven's 5th symphony once before with his Simon Bolívar Youth Orchestra, which featured on his debut record on Deutsche Grammophon.
