The disc and this headnote use the Landon numbers for the sonatas (in which the final Sonata is No. 62 instead of 52); the Hoboken numbers should zero one in. Some of Haydn’s earliest sonatas come off very well on a modern grand piano (Bavouzet plays a bright, consistently registered Yamaha CFX), but others cry out for a harpsichord—with a fortepiano sometimes an acceptable compromise. We hear both sides of that issue right away: Sonata No. 15 just doesn’t work here (Ronald Brautigam’s fortepiano does no better), but the piano’s sustained notes add grace and charm to Bavouzet’s lovely reading of No. 12.

This is Bavouzet’s Volume 5 of Haydn sonatas; I sense that he is becoming more appreciative of Haydn’s great variety—perhaps one should say more subtle. Each volume has featured sonatas early and late; on earlier discs, Bavouzet’s sparkling pianism was to the fore, with Allegro s and Presto s shining but Andante s and Adagio s often less convincing. His brilliance continues to impress, but it is the quieter moments that now grab me: The Andante s of sonatas No. 12 and No. 37 are played simply and directly, producing strong feeling without a hint of romanticism. On the other hand, Bavouzet goes to extremes in ornamenting repeats (“I have therefore exploited the entire armory of trills, mordents, and micro-cadenzas.”), so much so that the original line can be almost lost. This might seem opposed to any new subtlety, but he speaks in the notes of a “mesmerizing experiment” with the trio of Sonata No. 12; he is finding more and more in Haydn’s music as he progresses through this “ambitious, extended project.” I for one am delighted to follow him through it.

The sonatas 54, 55, and 56 are a trio that cannot be separated: Each has only two movements and seems incomplete by itself, yet the 34-minute total of the six movements goes well beyond any single sonata. They were dedicated to the newly wed Princess Marie Esterházy, but these unusual, tricky pieces could not have been meant for 15-year-old fingers. Blazouvet makes a convincing case for the entire set to be heard at one sitting, making this disc one of my favorite Haydn CDs.
