Notes and Editorial Reviews

Finally, Sony has gathered up and released all of Szell’s Haydn symphony recordings in a box. Nos. 88 and 104 are in well-preserved mono, and you get both recordings of No. 97. The performances are incomparable. Szell was a natural Haydn conductor: witty, razor sharp, colorful, and highly contrasted. The obscene bassoon fart (that’s what it is) in the slow movement of No. 93 has never been matched; wind parts cut through the texture beautifully; trumpets and drums never sound timid or flabby. Szell has the strings playing with immaculate rhythm, perfect intonation, and just the right amount of warmth in the slow movements. It’s an object lesson in correct “period” style. Even in Symphony No. 98, a work that for some reason befuddles even Read more Haydn specialists (Bernstein notably), Szell doesn’t miss a trick. The Mozartian slow movement is just lovely. He also uses the Landon editions of the scores wherever possible—one of the first major conductors to do so. The result is a landmark in the Haydn discovery, and a cornerstone of any serious Haydn symphony collection.

at last -Szell and Haydn November 12, 2014 By Roger K Graham (Moorestown, NJ) See All My Reviews "Been waiting for years to replace my LPs of Szell/Cleveland Orchestra of late Haydn symponies, and it is a great set! My audio is not world-class, but it sounds great to me, and the interpretations of controlled joy in the clever writing cpme through well." Report Abuse
ditto 5 stars November 11, 2014 By nicholas e. (Farmington, NM) See All My Reviews "I agree with the 5 star reviewers. Great music making. Receommend to those new to Haydn (like me). I would guess those who know Haydn by heart would also like these receordings." Report Abuse
No booklet November 11, 2014 By Lee S. (South Bend, IN) See All My Reviews "As a collector, I was excited about this boxed set of Szell's historic Haydn performances with the Cleveland Orchestra. I was very disappointed that Sony packaged a box set without any booklet; only the four discs. The disc sleeves are marked with the original date of the recordings and basic credits. But for a major label to distribute a boxed set without a substantial booklet seems rather cheap. I'll think twice before buying another boxed set from Sony." Report Abuse
