NOT A GOOD CHOICEOctober 30, 2014By Robert H Amos (Anchorage, AK)See All My Reviews"There are three Haydn symphonies on this disc -- but I bought it for the "Trauer", which I've known for at least a half century. The other two works are performed reasonably unexceptionally, but the "Trauer" is the worst performance of it I've ever encountered. The recording is said to date from 1995, which suggests a very young (and musically immature) conductor. He does not seem to have a clue about the expressive riches of the work. He just plows through it. The third movement, which is a gorgeous and heartfelt adagio, is played as though it was a brainless march. The orchestra plays efficiently and coldly, without any apparent involvement. Oh, yes! The CD is almost unlistenable. I'm not sure whether its ills are called "digital glare", or just what, but I'd as soon listen to an acoustical recording from the 1920's. as this one. And if the basic sound is bad, the nice people who recorded it have added lots of obviously fake reverb for it to swim in. Unless you're looking for a "Mercury" or "Farewell" you probably want to pass on this disc."Report Abuse
