NOT what it is claimed to be! Caveat emptor!! March 7, 2013 By Frank Hudson (Bowie, MD) See All My Reviews "This is NOT the Royal Phil conducted by Jonathan Carney, in what the packaging (and Arkiv website) imply and even state is a recording of orchestrated versions of Haydn quartets. It's an actual quartet - presumably made up of RPO players & led by Carney, who was their concertmaster - in competent and straightforward readings of three familiar quartets. Since I bought this in great excitement, expecting a real musicological find ("Who knew there were orchestrations of Haydn quartets!?" - I thought), I'm pretty upset to find that nobody at Arkive or at the RPO label, distributed by Allegro Music (which may be the real culprit) can be bothered to know the difference between a string quartet and a full orchestra. So BUYER BEWARE!! My low rating is based on the misleading labeling, not the performances." Report Abuse
Beautiful but misleading February 28, 2013 By Bernhard Matzinger (Son, NB) See All My Reviews "A word of warning: the music on this CD is referred to in Arkiv's catalogue as String Quartets - Orchestrated; this whetted my appetite for un unknown curiosity (to me at least), but to my disappointment the works are NOT orchestrated, just three of Haydn's string quartets. They are beautifully played by members of the Royal Philharmonic, but certainly not better than the Kodaly Quartet on Naxos. I don't understand why the complete CV of conductor Jonathan Carney is mentioned in the booklet but not the names of the members of the quartet: not even whether this it a permanent quartet or just formed for this occasion?"
