Notes and Editorial Reviews

When four young musicians meet to record three string quartets by Joseph Haydn - and, what's more, for their very first CD - they are clearly aiming to pay tribute to a composer who is too often neglected, hastily pigeonholed as a 'classic'. Yet Haydn is a genuine 'discoverer', nothing less than the creator of the quartet genre subsequently raised to perfection by Mozart, Schubert and Beethoven. In its playing, the Ebène Quartet shows us just how innovative and ambitious Haydn's intentions are, implicating the listener in a veritable experiment, where order and balance vie with invention, caprice, meditation and introspection.
