Notes and Editorial Reviews

HANDEL Chamber Duets Fabio Bonizzoni (hpd, cond); Roberta Invernizzi (sop); Marina de Liso (mez); La Risonanza GLOSSA 921516 (64:41 Text and Translation)

In Aci, Galatea e Polifemo (Glossa 921515), Fabio Bonizzoni gave a sentimental sendoff to the last release in his series dedicated to Handel’s Italian cantatas, and praise to all his colleagues. Though recorded in 2012, it was only released mid-year in 2013, by which time Read more Bonizzoni, Invernezzi, and Liso were already planning a reunion of sorts with this release of Handel’s chamber duets.

The music is of course self-recommending. Even if we leave to one side Mainwaring’s opinion that as these duets (and a pair of vocal trios) were intended for royalty, Handel was consequently writing without the need to indulge a less knowledgeable public, they are still persuasively attractive works, miniature scena that could have been drawn from some of the composer’s best operas. Twenty chamber duets are now thought to have been written by Handel, and circulated in manuscript. This album supplies us with a selection of 10, that range in subject from the anger of love scorned in No, di voi non vuo’ fidarmi , to the pastoral joy of Beato in ver chi può , to the radiant wit of Tanti strali al sen mi socchi.

Roberta Invernezzi demonstrates excellent florid technique, beautiful tone, and well considered phrasing. Marina de Liso possesses all this as well, but very occasionally gasps for breath ( Sono liete ) or ends a final note in a phrase prematurely ( Troppo cruda ), though she doesn’t lack agility in any of the faster coloratura passages. She also continues her habit of flattening final vowels: saetta-teh, ama-teh , etc. The singers perform well together, blending and dovetailing one another to excellent effect throughout. La Risonanza is reduced for this album to a continuo of three: cellist Caterina Dell’Agnello, harpsichordist Bonizzoni, and Craig Marchitelli on archlute and theorbo. They play with their accustomed stylishness and energy.

Closely engineered, this is a fine release in all respects. Fans of the performers and the operatic Handel will definitely want it.
