Notes and Editorial Reviews

Some of Grieg's most charming music appears in this ably executed collection, including the much-underrated Symphonic Dances, the composer's largest symphonic work. Heaven knows that the Bergen Philharmonic and Ole Kristian Ruud know the music, and the orchestra deserves special praise for fine playing by its wind section--critical especially in the Norwegian Dances, the Lyric Suite, well, actually just about everywhere! The finale of the Symphonic Dances is particularly impressive in that it offers lively rhythm and real forward movement at a surprisingly moderate basic tempo (Raymond Leppard on Philips, for example, is a full two minutes faster, but not noticeably more interesting). In short, these renditions certainly stand with the Read more best, and they come to us either in excellent stereo or in SACD multichannel formats.

Either way, the sonics offer good balances, excellent clarity, and a wide dynamic range, but remain just a touch distant and lacking in impact when compared to the very highest standards of this label. Also, the multichannel format is 5.0, and not 5.1, so if you have cheap speakers and rely on your subwoofer to provide the necessary bottom to the sound, be forewarned. A colleague of mine has pointed out that for classical music BIS's standard is arguably preferable to the 5.1 alternative. He's surely correct, but I do wish the industry would get its act together and agree on a single standard without making consumers crazy in the process. For this very reason I prefer the stereo version, which everyone can enjoy on its own considerable merits on the equipment they own now, without any further technical fuss or bother.
