Notes and Editorial Reviews

These three bold, dramatic and lyrical works of Henryk Górecki (1933 – 2010) were created during the transitional period in Polish music stretching from the post-Stalin cultural thaw to Górecki's lyrical "sacred minimalism" that would eventually lead to the Symphony of Sorrowful Songs. Beatus Vir, scored for a large ensemble was commissioned by Cardinal Karol Wojtyła (later to become Pope John Paul II) for the commemoration on the 900th anniversary of the martyrdom of St. Stanisław. It is a bold, impressive work. Muzyka staropolska (Old Polish Music) composed in 1969, draws inspiration from the folk music of the Tatra region in the Carpathian Mountains, once a northern outpost of the Ottoman Empire. The piece incorporates folk Read more music elements within the dramatic gestures of modern music. A sense of timelessness via a rich lyrical expression from Palestrina to the present permeates Totus tuus for acapella chorus, in which dramatic, subtly varied repetitions flow toward a breathtakingly serene conclusion.
