Notes and Editorial Reviews

The Secret Agent is a watershed score in Philip Glass' career in writing for film. Based on the novel by Joseph Conrad, The Secret Agent exposes the confused motives that lie at the heart of political terrorism. Philip Glass' lushly romantic score accompanies Christopher Hampton's independent 1995 film starring Bob Hoskins, Patricia Arquette, Robin Williams, Gérard Depardieu and Christian Bale. London of the late 19th Century is a haven for political exiles of all sorts, refugees, partisans, anarchists. Glass draws on the setting and composes an overtly romantic and expressionist score. Christopher Hampton, the film's director and screenwriter, is also known for his stage and screen versions of 'Dangerous Liasons' and more recently Read more for his screenplay to the award-winning "Atonement." Hampton and Glass later worked together when Philip Glass asked the writer to create a libretto from J.M Coetzee's novel "Waiting for the Barbarians" in 2005. Hampton again wrote a libretto Glass' 2007 opera "Appomattox." Read less
