Notes and Editorial Reviews

Maazel's...approach is spirited and unstereotyped, and he does obtain an altogether remarkable textural clarity. I'd never realised before just how much contrapuntal detail the score of An American in Paris contains—for instance, the real melodic interest in the centre of the Charleston episode lies in the second oboe and cor anglais (marked "solo" at fig. 61) but in the ordinary way they're elbowed out of the limelight by the violins. Not here, however, nor the cakewalk-like rhythm which emerges as a counterpoint to the Blues.

...with the exotic Cuban Overture, the present recording brings the composer’s colourful orchestration vividly to life.

-- Nicholas Ras, BBC Music Magazine
reviewing the Cuban Overture

...the highly imaginative arrangements, which amount, as it were to elaborate commentaries on Gershwin's texts, were written by François Jeanneau, a quite well-known French jazz musician... The keyboard parts...are played with exhilarating zest and at times it seems as if Miss Hendricks is afloat on a pianistic flood, even, in "I got rhythm," a tidal wave. And everything is recorded with a razor-sharp clarity.
