Notes and Editorial Reviews

FAURÉ Ballade, op. 19. Mazurka, op. 32. 4 Valses-Caprices. 9 Préludes, op. 103 Jean-Claude Pennetier (pn) MIRARE 72 (77:00)

Pennetier’s take on Fauré is mellow, ruminative, wistful, its leisurely pace allowing a play of color not lacking in brilliance or precision but inclining more toward pedaled impasto Read more than sec scintillance. The Ballade is relaxed and purring—very much a maundering mainstream performance—though, for those preferring a more ecstatically animated account, Dominique Merlet’s (Mandala 4933, Fanfare 22:6) is preeminent for impassioned elegance among more or less recent alternatives. The wistful undertow amid general vivacity of the Mazurka and Valses-Caprices —suggestive of seeing one’s old flame whirling across a crowded ballroom in the arms of another man—is deftly rendered, easily topping Stott to rival classic recorded performances by Doyen or Collard. There’s more pith in the Préludes than here meets the ear—more consistently mined by Jean Doyen, say, or Peter Jacobs, or the underrated Jeffrey Swann—though Pennetier’s readings are neither duds nor dull. The first of a projected four-CD intégrale , the program lends itself well to a certain homogeneity of mood. The real test of Pennetier’s interpretive powers will come in the barcarolles and nocturnes—stay tuned. Closely taken, transparently detailed, immediate sound, with a wide dynamic spread, complements Pennetier’s garrulously fluent command. Recommended.
