Notes and Editorial Reviews

"Beyond the likeness in names and inspiration, the Fauré Pelléas et Mélisande Suite and the Schoenberg Pelléas et Mélisande really have very little in common. Music of great charm and lucidity, the Fauré suite responds well to Vonk’s poised but not impassive approach. Revealing again the latent ballet conductor, he directs a Sicilienne of subtle nuance in fairly strict time, with a lovely flute solo from the late, lamented Jacob Berg, who would soon after retire because of cancer. Schoenberg’s sprawling late-Romantic tone poem exists in another realm. Despite superlative playing by the orchestra, Vonk’s rather restrained approach initially put me off, as it reduces the emotional temperature of Read more this most emotive of Schoenberg’s scores. A couple of subsequent hearings have changed my opinion. Vonk is light-years away from the surging sensuousness of, say, Karajan, but arguably closer to the cooler ambiguities of Maeterlinck’s play. What seemed reticence now impresses as a reluctance to overwhelm the subject. This is, after all, a wistful love that expresses itself in glances, sighs, a touch on the hair, a stolen kiss, and a single fatal embrace. Golaud’s jealousy is more frighteningly palpable and the gloom surrounding his castle more severe when much that surrounds it is subtle and understated. In all this, Vonk and the orchestra achieve a lucidity and brilliance that is very appealing. The more time I spend with this performance, the more I prefer it to more overt performances."
