Notes and Editorial Reviews

This disc is an experience not to be missed. For comparison we have John Rutter's recording of the Faure made in 1984 (Collegium/Gamut) and a new recording by Matthew Best with the Corydon singers on Hyperion. All three use Rutter's carefully reconstructed score of Faure's 1893 version that Rutter believed was nearest to the composer's personal wishes. What pleases me, in the King's recording, is that this so distinctively English-sounding choir can perform with such understanding a major work of French romanticism. This shows itself in many subtle ways: sensitive phrasing, finely graded dynamics, and also, surprisingly, in the expressive use of rubato. I was struck, in the opening bars, by the addition of two full beats at the two great Read more sighing descents of the strings. Olaf Bar's verse, ''Hostias et preces'' in the Offertoire is remarkable for its quiet restraint; emotion is conveyed to the listener more by understatement than by overt drama. . . .

Cleobury's conception of the Durufle is quieter than Best's on Hyperion, and overwhelmingly sad. That keynote of sorrow and mourning is admirably rendered by Ann Murray's wonderful Pie Jesu, which rises from quiet lamentation to a climax of grief. The tenors and basses sing their opening plainchant theme with gentle smoothness, the trebles and altos sounding tender and remote. . . .
