Notes and Editorial Reviews

This classic disc returns with a “bonus” in the form of Delius’ Brigg Fair that, while a nice gesture on EMI’s part, sort of makes nonsense of the album title “English String Music,” and isn’t a terribly special performance. It’s a bit sluggish (eighteen minutes as opposed to Beecham’s fifteen), and while Barbirolli loved the Hallé Orchestra, and they him, they were always a very second class, scruffy sounding bunch. So we will pass over this particular item and move on to the important stuff.

Simply put, there is no finer collection than this of Elgar and Vaughan Williams masterpieces for string orchestra in the catalog, although in the Tallis Fantasia, glorious though it is,
Read more I retain a slight preference for recordings by Ormandy (Sony) and above all Silvestri (EMI). The Elgar performances though, the Introduction and Allegro especially (sound clip attached), simply wipe the floor with the competition. The playing is passionate, spontaneous, vibrant, and it’s all gorgeously recorded. Indeed, the sonics haven’t dated a bit. Most serious collectors will have purchased this disc in one of its prior incarnations, but if you haven’t yet then now’s your chance.
