Notes and Editorial Reviews

Horses for courses, you might say: I Musici's suave string tone is perfectly suited to this programme of mainly romantic works, and has been well captured in a warm but clean recording, the only possible criticism of which is that the double-bass is slightly too strong throughout—though that's a fault on the right side. The playing is full-blooded, but emotion is kept within bounds and tempos are not allowed to swoon: the Barber Adagio, for example, though given due intensity is not turned into a weepie. Perhaps the item offering greatest opportunities here is the Respighi suite culled from lute sources: there is sweetness in the ''Italiana'', character in the Besard tunes, graceful languor in the ''Siciliana'' and strength in the sumptuous Read more sonorities of the elaborately-scored ''Passacaglia''.

The marking allegro piacevole for the first movement of the Elgar has been interpreted in such a way as to make it sound rather cheerful, without the usual overtones of wistfulness; and the absence of familiar small rubatos lends the Serenade a slightly different atmosphere. There is vigorous playing in the spiky section of the initial Allegro and in the Prokofievian finale of the string concerto by Nino Rota—a composer whose collaborations with Fellini have overshadowed his delightful operas (do you remember The Italian straw hat on RCA TRL21153, 3/77—nla?). This work may be unlikely to win a permanent footing in the repertory, well made as it is, but it is worth a hearing, and is put over here with conviction.'
