Notes and Editorial Reviews

Gaetano Donizetti, who was born on 29 November 1797 in Bergamo, is considered one of the most productive and successful opera composers of the 19th century. He landed his first success with his opera Zoraida di Granata, which enjoyed its premiere performance in Rome in 1822. His international breakthrough was in Milan in 1830 with Anna Bolena - and with L`elisir d`amore (Milan, 1832), Lucrezia Borgia (Milan, 1833) and Maria Stuarda (Naples, 1834). He presented his masterpiece Don Pasquale in 1842 in Paris - the most perfect opera buffa since Rossini`s Il barbiere di Siviglia. Donizetti finished the score in just eleven days but despite this impressively short period the composition is excellently arranged and provides the singers with a Read more perfect opportunity to display the belcanto style of singing. The story is carried by just four characters, which correspond to the figures to be found in commedia dell`arte and which the maestro outlined as follows: ``Don Pasquale, old-fashioned, tight-fisted, gullible, stubborn, good-natured at heart; Malatesta, a man who knows what to do, witty, enterprising; Ernesto, a passionate youth; Norina, impulsive nature, impatient when contradicted but sincere and sensitive.`` Donizetti, who was at the height of his fame and ruled over French opera at the time, could be more than satisfied with the success of the premiere performance: ``Don Pasquale took place last night. A huge success! The end of the duet between Lablache (Don Pasquale) and Grisi (Norina) was also repeated. This wonderful recording was produced in 1988 with an all Italian cast under the baton of Bruno Campanella. Read less
