Alfredo Catalani is one of those operatic composers whose fame rests on a few arias that appear on occassion in recitals and on recordings. Indeed, the most famous aria from 'La Wally,' "Ebben? N'andrò lontana," was made famous in the motion picture 'Diva.' Catalani's ouvre falls into a gray area, the period in Italian opera that spans the later years of Verdi and the early years of Puccini. Catalani was something of an anomaly in Italian opera, a composer who embraced an Italianate style of Wagnerism.
It's surprising that Catalani's 'La Wally' never established a firm foothold in the operatic repertoire. The opera was championed by Arturo Toscanini, who went so far as to name his daughter after the heroine. This recording, taped live in
Read more Rome, makes a strong case for this passionate, lyrical work. Soprano Renata Tebaldi sings the title role with an ideal mix of vocal splendor and dramatic fire. Tebaldi's rendition of the justly famous "Ebben? N'andrò lontana" is a showstopper and one of many good reasons for sampling this Italian operatic gem. Read less
