Notes and Editorial Reviews

The original 1973 LP featured just the Cage Dances and Reich's "Four Organs," the latter in a more relaxed--if that's the word--performance than the austere 1970 version on Wergo. What the three have in common, of course, is rhythm, rhythm, rhythm... and then some. Stravinsky was perhaps the first Western classical composer to incorporate honest-to-goodness ethnic rhythms in serious music, and things have never been quite the same since. Steve Reich himself has acknowledged the profound effect that "Le Sacre" had on him when he Read more first heard it as a teenager. Ironically, "Four Organs" itself is the most static of Reich's pieces, saved somehow by that lone maraca, which gives it extra impetus all the way through. Read less
