Notes and Editorial Reviews

Numerous textual differences distinguish the original 1928 manuscript version of Villa-Lobos' 12 Etudes for Guitar from the composer's revised version published in 1957. These principally encompass repeats, rhythmic variants, accents, and tempo relationships, plus actual new musical material in Etudes 10 and 11. Listeners accustomed to the more familiar revisions will find the earlier versions relatively wild in spirit. Certainly the composer's technical hurdles hold no problems at all for Timo Korhonen's masterful virtuosity. His interpretations tend to emphasize each work's "etude-ness", as, for example, in the speed and suavity with which arpeggios dance across the strings in the first three selections. Korhonen also is Read more terrific when it comes to keeping textures in clear and clean perspective, such as the alternation between chords and bass notes in Nos. 6 and 8. On the other hand, David Leisner's greater rhythmic freedom makes the latter etude's sliding half-step chords sound juicier.

While Korhonen's rubatos in the "repeated chord" fourth etude fragment the overall line, Leisner's are more fluid and long-limbed. And Korhonen's slow, clunky way with the set's final piece yields to Leisner's considerably quicker, red-blooded, and rhythmically more precise account. Incidentally, Korhonen repeats all of No. 7, whereas Leisner plays it once through. We might relate Korhonen's Apollonian rigor and surface sheen to Maurizio Pollini, while Leisner is more of an Arthur Rubinstein.

Korhonen's virtues enhance the variety of style and mood of Leo Brouwer's Estudios Sencillos (Simple Studies). It's all too easy to sacrifice tone for speed, yet Korhonen's super-secure left-hand fretwork and right-hand articulation ensure that the most rapid flamenco-inspired passages never splinter and scratch. Also note Korhonen's concentration in slower movements, as his impeccable balances within chords in the Sarabande and the penultimate Movido admirably bear out. Again, the Pollini/Rubinstein analogy holds true between Korhonen's Brouwer interpretations and those of Ricardo Cobo on Naxos. Whichever performances ultimately make it to your collection, there's no doubt that Timo Korhonen's awesome abilities will impress even the pickiest guitar buffs.
