I am reminded, perversely, of that old vaudeville bit: “What’s more fun than two glorious weeks of vacation in the City of Brotherly Love?” Answer: “One week.”
This disc is the first of three that comprised Brilliant’s survey of Albinoni’s concertos for one and two oboes (and also included the non-oboe concertos from op. 7). Actually, I liked the three-disc set (
Fanfare
29:6), but one disc’s worth of Albinoni’s concertos is probably enough for a single listening session, even if the performances are as satisfying as these. If you are new to Albinoni’s historic concertos (usually considered the first of their kind), Schilli and Deangeli offer as good a way as any to make their acquaintance. Brilliant’s super bargain price is, of course, an incentive, but by no means the only one. If, on the other hand, the concept of “completeness” resonates with your inner self, you might consider Holliger (Philips), Robson (Chandos), or Baccini (Bongiovanni). However, you can’t go wrong with Brilliant’s three-disc box.
