Notes and Editorial Reviews

I'm quoting from the back cover: "These discs will be a revelation to those who honor Corelli . . . here is his compositional successor. Superb notes by Michael Talbot complement this sumptuous set of golden treasures. Warmly recommended. (Fanfare, USA)"

Naturally, I wondered who wrote this encomium, since I knew it wasn't yours truly. A minimal bit of research revealed the source to be our own Robert Maxham. Of course, one always wonders whether a blurb is divorced from the actual content of a review. Well, it isn't, and everything Maxham wrote about the original release (see Fanfare 18:5, p. 114) is absolutely true. This is a terrific set, possibly an even better value now offered as a two-for-one bargain.

My interest in Albinoni has always centered on his oboe concertos, presumably the first of their kind. But he was a prolific composer in other media as well. Unfortunately, most of his 50-odd operas and stage works have fallen through history's cracks, but he did leave a substantial legacy of instrumental works, mostly gathered into homogeneous collections. Here we have six church sonatas and 12 "harmonious entertainments." Neither group was intended for continuous listening, which apparently inspired the Locatelli Trio (Elizabeth Wallfisch, violin; Richard Tunnicliff, cello; Paul Nicholson, harpsichord and organ) to intersperse the individual sonatas throughout the discs. That, of course, will drive collectors who are obsessed with order crazy, but ordinary listeners are more likely to applaud. One can easily distinguish between the two sources auditorily - the Church Sonatas, op. 4, are played with organ, while the Entertainments, op. 6, feature a harpsichord. As advertised, this is the complete package: splendid performances, fine reproduction, and an attractive and informative presentation.
