The Britten performances are consistently absorbing, with violist Lars Anders Tomter shining in the Elegy and Lachrymae, while Grieg's Holberg sounds newly minted.
Back in October 1995, I voiced unstinting praise for the five Britten items generously housed on disc one. Certainly, the accounts of the Frank Bridge Variations, Simple Symphony and Prelude and Fugue for 18 strings are consistently absorbing, and violist Lars Anders Tomter shines in the early solo Elegy and dusky Lachrymae. All goes swimmingly, too, in Grieg's complete string music (Holberg sounds newly minted) and the two Nielsen works that comprise the remainder (the Little Suite and moving At the Bier of a Young Artist).
