Notes and Editorial Reviews

Attentive readings of Brahms's autumnal masterpieces

"Joan Enric Liuna takes what is in some ways an original line with Brahms's Clarinet Quintet. That is not that he is wilful with the music; indeed, he is scrupulously attentive to the markings, with very few deviations (he follows convention by making use of a free rubato, not suggested by Brahms, in the pizzicato variation of the finale). It is by stressing these markings, especially in the first movement and by the use of strong accents giving particular prominence to the second subject, that he provides a greater emphasis than is made by many performers who are primarily moved by the gentle, retrospective quality which Brahms himself acknowledged...

The contemporaneous Trio was also written for Richard Miihlfeld, to whose stimulus we owe these works (there is a witty caricature of him, hair all over the place, made by Adolph von Menzel during the first performance of the Quintet). If the Trio does not share the particular quality of the Quintet, it lacks nothing in the old composer's art in making musical ingenuities seem diverting and relaxing. It is a work that should be more widely known, and enjoyed."

Late Brahms June 11, 2013 By R. Oxley (St. John's, NL) See All My Reviews "For those who enjoy the Brahms Clarinet Quintet, this version can be recommended for it's directness and beautiful balance. We do not have a featured player out to impress. Luna and the Tokyo Quartet are at the service of the music. The Trio for clarinet, violin and piano is, to me, a much more endearing work and gets its due in this release. The recorded sound is very fine." Report Abuse
