Royal Chamber MusicOctober 2, 2014By owen r. (lakewood, CA)See All My Reviews"This disc originally released in'93, is performed by the Royal Philharmonic Chamber Ensemble with Johnathan Carney, Director. Mr. Carney and his family (parents and three siblings) are all Julliard grads. He was invited by Vladimar Ashkenazy to lead the RPO. He made his debut in '91. I am not real familiar with these works but I did compare the ''American'' with another recording that Penguin Guide rated as outstanding and Carney's performance blew the other out of the water. I am very much in agreement with the other customer reviews: highly recommended both in terms of the music-making but also in Dick Lewzey's skilled engineering of the recording. At the bargain price of this disc you can't afford to pass it up."Report Abuse
Absolute Masterworks!September 6, 2014By Henry S. (Springfield, VA)See All My Reviews"Since this recording was issued as part of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra's Masterworks series, one might expect to find orchestrated versions of Dvorak's American Quartet and Borodin's String Quartet # 2. Such is not the case; you get the famous chamber music quartets, performed in breathtakingly clear audiophile sound, possibly the finest I have ever heard. My only concern is that nowhere is the performing ensemble identified. We don't know if the group is a professional string quartet or simply 4 string players from the RPO. If the latter is the case, trust me- they sound as good as any string quartet you can name. This is a luxurious, gorgeous performance of two of the staples of the chamber music repertoire. I'll wager most Arkivmusic customers already own good recordings of these two supreme quartets, but even so, this sensational disk deserves a place on the shelf. Give it a try, and see why I am ecstatic about this one. Highest recommendation!!"Report Abuse
