Notes and Editorial Reviews

Among the most self-effacing of artists, De-Gaetani's individuality grew from her commitment to whatever she performed, ranging from medieval and Renaissance music to twentieth-century works written just for her. Her recorded legacy reflects not just what she has left us, but how much she was willing to give of herself. In speaking of her work, one talks about her communicativeness, feeling, commitment, and artistry rather than “the voice“ per se, thereby accounting for her success in such varied repertoire and the enthusiasm for her singing generated particularly among connoisseurs and colleagues.

The material on [this CD] dates from the 1970s: the Wolf was recorded in November 1973, the Schubert a year later... The Wolf in
Read more particular shows its age: there's a slight edge to the voice (at least in this digital transfer), there's too much noise from the piano pedals (notably in “Sie blasen zum abmarsch“), and the sound just isn't as clean or clear overall as one would want. Fortunately, the musical content remains unaffected. I don't have the easiest time with these particular Wolf songs: too often the chromatic shape of the vocal line distracts me from the text, which I then feel to have been compromised by the way Wolf has chosen to set it (of course Wolf's choices are just the point, but I'm caught in a vicious cycle from which I've not yet escaped). But DeGaetani's immediacy of approach, and her pinpoint accuracy in projecting the composer's chromatic wanderings, actually helped me investigate my feelings about this music in a way I'd never done. By revealing it so selflessly, the mezzo faces me with the music head-on, making me listen.

Originally paired on LP with Schoenberg's Book of the Hanging Gardens, the Schubert songs are likewise noteworthy for DeGaetani's immediacy of communication, and for the way in which she inhabits them. Nur wer die Sehnsucht kennt and Heidenröslein—probably the best-known of the bunch—sound as fresh as if they're being conceived on the spot. And technical problems are nonexistent: the speed of An mein Herz clearly holds no terrors, with Gilbert Kalish's startlingly fleet pianism representing, as usual, an integral part of the achievement.

Jan DeGaetani's Lieder disc is another irresistible reissue, worth the asking price for the stunning rendition of Blondel zu Marien alone.
