Notes and Editorial Reviews

With Adrian Boult's recording of Job locked up in EMI's big Vaughan Williams box (which contains highly variable accounts of the symphonies and other orchestral works), and Vernon Handley's EMI reading somewhat disappointing both as a performance and recording, not to mention a bunch of other (mostly good) performances floating around, Richard Hickox's Job makes a fine recommendation. It's an alert, lively interpretation full of color and impact (the vision of Satan enthroned is particularly vivid), and the sonics are very good. You can make a powerful argument that Job is Vaughan Williams' greatest orchestral work in any medium, and this version certainly supports that claim. The orchestral variations, arranged by Gordon Jacob from the Read more wind-band original version, make an apt and unusual coupling. It's good to have this "on-demand" production available from Arkivmusic.com, particularly with the original booklet notes included.
