Notes and Editorial Reviews

Geirr Tveitt (1928-1981), one of the most talented and prolific Norwegian composers after Grieg, suffered the tragic loss of virtually all of his manuscripts, representing his life's work, when in 1970 a fire destroyed the barn where the scores were being kept. Fortunately, through copies, instrumental parts, broadcast tapes, and various other sources, a large number of his works are slowly being reclaimed. Tveitt might best be classed as Norway's answer to Bela Bartók, at least to the extent that he was a genuine ethnomusicologist who evolved a personal style directly based on the influence of folksong. His epic collection, titled 100 Folk-tunes from Hardanger (51 of which survived the fire), exists in several versions, for both piano and Read more orchestra. The melodies themselves are fascinating, haunting, and fresh, while Tveitt's orchestrations give them form without damaging their substance. This home-grown performance is as fine as anyone could wish.
