Notes and Editorial Reviews

If you missed these three discs on their original release (as I did), you may want to pause and give them some consideration. Boccherini’s Guitar Quintets are really beautiful works, full of charm, variety, good tunes, and interesting forms. They include the famous “Fandango” and the variations on the “Ritirata di Madrid”. Happily, these performances are excellent. Zoltán Tokos plays the guitar with an attractive liquid tone, almost no performance noises, and he’s very well balanced against a fine string quartet.

Some of these works, the “Fandango” quintet especially, have been making the rounds of period-instrument groups, where a sort of informal competition seems to be going on to see who can play the music the
Read more loudest and the most crudely. This performance has all of the necessary vigor (castanets included), but it still sounds like chamber music. You also get the famous String Quintet in E major, the one with the famous minuet, and you have no idea how lovely it sounds played on modern instruments, with a good, sturdy minuet rhythm and tempo, as opposed to being played on muted period instruments, senza vibrato. Give this a shot.

Boccherini and the Guitar May 21, 2013 By L. Weil (El Cerrito,, CA) See All My Reviews "The Boccherini quintets for guitar and strings are a treasure. Although an Italian, during his years in Spain he internalized the ethos of Spanish music and the result some extraordinary music." Report Abuse
