Notes and Editorial Reviews

The suites from Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky's ballets The Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, and Nutcracker are among his most played pieces, but the music from his operas is much less familiar to western concert-goers. To solve this problem, composer and conductor Peter Breiner has created orchestral suites containing music from The Queen of Spades and The Voyevoda, operas that are largely unfamiliar to U.S. audiences in any format. Breiner's adaptations are highly melodic, memorable, and highly dramatic, in keeping with the opera's stories, and his richly romantic orchestration is idiomatic and judicious. The performances by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra with Breiner conducting are full of energy and enthusiasm, and the project evidently Read more captured the musicians' imagination, considering how vibrantly expressive and colorful their playing is. Especially notable are the adapted arias by violinist Vesa-Matti Leppänen and cellist Andrew Joyce in The Voyevoda suite, which convey an operatic spirit in instrumental form. These 2012 recordings are vibrant and strong, and the sound is full and detailed, with a natural concert hall ambience that isn't too resonant.

Pete's Pretty Little Tunes January 28, 2015 By owen  r. (lakewood, CA) See All My Reviews "This CD is a collection of short melodies from two operas. This is music you might play in the car when on a short drive or when puttering around in the house or garage. It does not require your close attention that more formal music (e.g. a symphony) would. For what it is this is probably pretty good stuff--certainly well played and recorded. But since this is not the kind of music I care for I can't go for more than 3 stars." Report Abuse

Welcomed Orchestral Suites August 20, 2013 By W. Wilborn (Richwood, TX) See All My Reviews "Being a fan of Tchaikovsky's music, but not fund of opera, these two new orchestral suites are welcomed. As usual, Breiner has captured the Tchaikovsky traits. The compositions are well played, the recorded sound is good, and the Naxos budget price is always a bonus. Recommended." Report Abuse
